We mostly knew Terry from our times up at a sort of retreat in Lanark county - an isolated farm where a group of friends would gather from time to time for some quiet time. No electricity, no running water (other than that provided by gravity), no technological intrusions, just people relaxing and camping and taking a breather from their busy lives. Terry was always very animated. He would tell us about how his campaigns were going, very much David against the oppressing Goliath. He would tell us about which aspects were moving forward and which seemed to be stalled.
But one time, a couple of years ago, he surprised us. He talked about himself and how lonely he was. It was the first time we heard Terry talk about his own needs and not the needs of others, and it was all the more moving because of that.
Not long after, Terry and Daniel became partners, and the change in Terry was incredible. He had now a soul-mate, someone who loved and cherished him, and was a full participant in his life. You only had to spot Terry walking down the street with that new-found spring in his step, to know that something truly profound and beautiful had happened.
