Kathy Dillon (Terry's Sister)

Comments

Hello, my name is Kathy Dillon, Terry's sister. Terry & I were both born in Montreal, lived in Toronto as children and then moved to Ottawa as teenagers. We were close in age-Terry being older by a year and 4 months. In 1968 when Terry was 9, we had an opportunity to live in Poland for a year while my mother completed her thesis in East European history. Terry and I lived with different local families and enjoyed the unique experience. Terry's nature as an activist is remembered as early as 1972, at the age of 13, when we went to a unitarian church camp near Collingwood. During an amateur talent night, Terry wrote and recited a very funny anti-smoking poem beside the campfire with great gusto, and made a big impression on the camp counsellors. We don't have that poem now, but I do remember another poem that Terry wrote in grade 6 that you might like to hear. I remember only one verse of three: The V of wild geese were winging for spring. Each goose was thinking of many goslings. They are born so tiny, helpless and young, Until they were able to fly and run. During the last 5 years my husband Matt and I have lived in Nova Scotia and we have only been able to enjoy Terry's company during visits to Ottawa or by email. Terry would always keep us informed of his activities and encourage us to spread the word to others. We always knew that he had many friends and contacts through his activities, but we now know just how extensive those ties were. Everyone Terry knew meant very much to him. My mother and I are comforted to by the fact that Terry really had two families-his natural family, and his very large number of friends in the social activism community. We wish to thank all those who have helped organize this remembrance of Terry and especially Jean-Marc Hachey who has organized much of the Service and reception. We would also like to thank Daniel Guertin for being such an important part of Terry's life. He provided a stable environment and much happiness for Terry. Together with Daniel we have appreciated the many kind words of comfort and sympathy from everyone. Reading the wonderful comments that Terry's friends have shared with us has been immensely uplifting for us. My mother would now be pleased to share some of these kind words we have received.
